I have been reading Brian Sooy’s book “Raise Your Voice: A Cause Manifesto.” This book is rich with wisdom for leaders of non-profit organizations who want to inspire others to embrace their mission. Brian has developed A Cause Manifesto; 12 principles leaders can use to clarify why their organization exists and why others should join their cause.
What I found interesting in these principles was their applicability to building a strong marriage. The principle BE COURAGEOUS shown in the graphic above is one of my favorites.
Just recently, my husband and I celebrated 30 years of marriage. We have experienced a little bit of everything we recited in our marriage vows: “…for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish…” What has helped us be successful is that we had a vision of what we wanted our marriage/family to be and what we wanted to accomplish together. The power of our shared vision gave us the courage to change, adapt, and push through the challenges we faced within our relationsip and circumstances we faced as a family. One of our shared visions was to raise strong, resilient children who would be a blessing to their families and their communities. I am pretty thrilled with how our vision became a reality!
I’m looking forward to further exploring Brian’s principles and applying them in the community development work I am doing.
