“You really can change the world if you care enough.” -Marian Wright Edelman
On November 7, 2014, I am returning to Cambodia with a team to provide assistance to Teen Challenge Cambodia (TCC) on Phase II of their biogas digester project. I am so excited about this project and the other ministries will be working with that I can barely sleep!
An essential element in the completion of the biogas digester project is to acquire the additional pigs who will produce the majority of the manure needed daily to “feed” the biogas digester. The pigs cannot be purchased until the piggery is complete. TCC took the photo above of the piggery on October 22, 2014.
In addition to the piggery, the toilet/shower facility adjacent to the biogas digester must also be completed. Human waste will also be piped directly into the biogas digester. This process will remove human and most animal waste from the TCC property and eliminate their use of firewood for cooking.
The methane gas produced in the biogas digester will provide fuel for the newly installed gas stove (shown below). The cooks will be able to cook for up to 50 people per day, three times per day with the fuel produced in the digester. In time, the piggery will also provide a source of income through the sale of piglets.
Our team will also have the privilege of meeting the children who built their own school and provide them with some school supplies. I cannot wait.
